Microdermabrasion is a minimally invasive skin-exfoliation treatment designed to improve the appearance of sun damage, scars, wrinkles, and hyperpigmentation. Beyond its cosmetic benefits, it also promotes better circulation and lymphatic flow. Results are visible immediately, and patients can return to their regular activities right after treatment. Performed in-office, microdermabrasion does not require anesthesia and can be combined with other procedures, such as chemical peels or laser treatments.
Unlike dermabrasion—a more intensive, surgical procedure that removes several layers of skin to treat severe skin issues—microdermabrasion is gentle and non-surgical.

Typically performed by an aesthetician, microdermabrasion uses a handheld device to spray tiny aluminum oxide crystals onto the targeted skin. The crystals, along with dead skin cells, are then suctioned away, revealing fresh, rejuvenated skin underneath. Sessions usually last between 5 and 60 minutes. While results are noticeable immediately, they are temporary, and ongoing treatments every 2 to 4 weeks are recommended for sustained improvement.
Risks and Considerations
Microdermabrasion is safe for all skin types, including Asian and darker skin tones, which can be more prone to discoloration with other treatments. Most patients experience only mild redness or irritation. Patients over 70 may have a slightly higher risk of bruising or minor skin abrasions. Sun protection after treatment is essential, as the procedure can temporarily reduce the skin’s natural barrier.
For individuals with a history of cold sores, microdermabrasion may trigger a flare-up. In such cases, avoiding treatment near the lips or taking preventive antiviral medication may be recommended.
