Ultherapy® uses ultrasound energy to lift and tighten the skin on the face and neck. By targeting the deeper layers of tissue typically addressed in a facelift or neck lift—while leaving the surface skin untouched—Ultherapy stimulates collagen production, resulting in firmer, more youthful-looking skin. According to its manufacturer, Ulthera, Inc., Ultherapy is “the only noninvasive procedure FDA-cleared to lift skin on the neck, chin, and brow.”

The Procedure

Performed in a physician’s office, Ultherapy begins with cleansing the skin and applying ultrasound gel to the treatment area. A handheld device delivers focused ultrasound energy beneath the skin, producing gentle heat that stimulates collagen growth. Some patients experience mild discomfort during treatment, which varies depending on the individual and the area being treated.

A full face and neck treatment typically takes 60 to 90 minutes, while partial treatments—such as the brow or a smaller section of the face—usually take about 30 minutes.

Results

Ultherapy is designed for mildly to moderately loose or sagging skin. Brow treatments lift the eyelids, making the eyes appear more open, while neck and chin treatments reduce sagging skin and improve the appearance of a double chin or “turkey gobbler.”

While some patients notice immediate improvement, most results develop gradually over 2 to 3 months as new collagen forms. Full results are typically visible at 6 months. Most patients require only one session, though those with more significant sagging may need additional treatments. Results can last up to a year.

Side Effects

Side effects are usually mild and temporary, limited to the treated area, and may include:

  • Slight redness
  • Swelling
  • Tingling
  • Tenderness

Ultherapy is a non-surgical alternative for patients seeking skin lifting and tightening without undergoing a facelift.
